Description
Newton Upon Rawcliffe is an attractive, quiet village four miles North of the Market town of Pickering. Mentioned in The Domesday Book, Newton is a traditional North Yorkshire village of stone and pantile cottages and farms built round the wide green and duck pond. It has a pleasant pub, church, chapel and playing field with hard court. Lying just inside The North York Moors National Park, it has many pleasant walks, bridleways and spectacular views over Newtondale. There is a good range of shops, schools and services available in Pickering and from here there are excellent road links to the East Coast and The City of York. There is a train station at the nearby town of Malton that runs to York and the Intercity service beyond.
This handsome pair of cottages lie on the east side of the village green with a westerly aspect. It is believed that they were at one time a single property that was latterly divided into two. Although the current owners reside in Edistan Cottage and rent Hill Rise as a holiday let the pair might easily revert back to one family home (subject to relevant planning consents). Which ever combination is preferred there is little doubting that the crowning glory to the property is its garden. On a site of just over an acre the garden is immaculately manicured and well stocked developing from the formal to the cultivated and finally coming to an end at a lawn that might easily be deemed a pony paddock.
Although similar in size and layout the two cottages have fitted kitchens and two separate reception rooms. There are two double bedrooms and a bathroom on both first floors.

From here there are a range of outbuildings that include Workshop 14’4” x 10’10”, Garden Store 14’4” x 7’10, Fuel Store 13’9” x 6’1”, Loose box 12’6” x 9’1”. To the rears of both cottages is a patio area interspersed with colourful shrubs and the owners pots. This offers the perfect vantage point to take in the garden. This is down predominantly to lawn with beautifully manicured edging, colourful herbaceous borders and raised beds. On walking down the garden there is a paved patio with a creeper covered pergola overhead. There are quiet seating areas, specimen plants and dwarf conifers thoughtfully planted. The garden also offers a productive cottage garden with a vegetable beds and a green house. The garden seem to go on for an age finally coming to an expanse of lawn within low stone walls and lined with mature trees to its southern boundary.
